Named after the Byung Chul Han Quote ‘The terrestrial order is giving way to a digital order, the world of things is being replaced by a world of non-things – a constantly expanding ‘infosphere’ of information and communication which displaces objects and obliterates any stillness and calmness in our lives’
An ephemeral sculpture of metal, wire, wood, copper and tubing. A ‘Non Thing’ messily connected to the earth and nature, trying to replicate it whilst plugged into it’s resources. I’ve purposefully made an ephemeral piece, as the quote itself relates to the discarding relationship we have to objects.
I’d wanted to create a ‘non- thing’ for a while, but had been focused on the scrolls. Using materials I already had, I got to work outside, moving and lifting, changing things around as I went. Jonathan had previously suggested an ephermeral piece and I’m not sure why I hadn’t done this before. It fits beautifully with the references to impermanence in our relation to objects in Byung- Chul Hans work.
I’ve been getting myself used to writing descriptions of my pieces for proposals and social media
Inspired by Byung-Chul Hans quote ‘The terrestrial order is giving way to a digital order, the world of things is being replaced by a world of non-things- a constantly expanding ‘infosphere’ of information and communication which displaces objects and obliterates any stillness and calmness in our lives’
The piece is ephemeral, in reference to the impermanence of modern objects. It attempts to replicate nature whilst connected to its resources.
