The 1-1 with Jonathan this term really got me thinking about what I’ve learned from the experiments and projects I’m now working on. What is it about the work I’m creating now that feels right?
A big takeaway was that I need some kind of conceptual framework to feel comfortable creating freely. The scrolls themselves have a really strong conceptual framework which makes me feel really free to create and paint/ sew however I want.
We discussed the gathering this weekend and how I’m planning on displaying the piece, the irony of how I got involved with this group (on socials) and the types of discussions we’re having.
I noted to Jonathan that I feel incredibly happy creating work that has to do with a theme and exploring that theme through my work which can then lead to wider conversations. I think this is a really important part of my practice.
We spoke about how to potentially integrate my pieces into the environment, which my projection videos are already doing, but could extend out into the other pieces aswell.
Speaking about projection again really helped because working solidly on the scroll piece whilst also training my drawing skills has meant I haven’t been focusing on the projections for a while.
Jonathan showed me his vast collection of projectors and suggested using (and borrowing for which I am very grateful) a small portable projector that I could then go out and experiment using on multiple different surfaces outside.
We discussed what my challenges are from now until the end of the degree and the biggest one I see is just keeping myself organised. I know what I want to be creating now and just need to get my project manager hat on to make sure I have enough to time achieve these goals and create these pieces.
We also spoke about video work and poetic prose over the top, videos I still want to be creating and feel comfortable doing so. I wonder now if these are the pieces where I really let them be spontaneous parts of my walks as my dark, light, dark, light video was
The session really helped me to both see where I am right now, where I am aiming to go and what’s driving the passion behind the projects and ideas I have chosen. I’m very grateful to have this guidance, it’s becoming incredibly clear how much I have changed as an artist over these years and how valuable having a mentor throughout the process truly is.
