On Saturday evening I managed to go out and get footage for first experiments for ‘Take your fear outside’.
It took two goes to get the footage I wanted, due to the technical elements of getting electricity safely outside on a misty/slightly rainy day and also getting the projector to project the doomscroll image.
By the second go me and my partner had managed to make sure everything was aligned to get the shot. The sound is low on the video but best listened too on full volume, something that I will record specifically with a microphone next time as it really added to the feeling of being deep in nature.
The process was challenging, lining everything up for a shoot with just two people, making sure that the multiple pieces of equipment were all working, footage was downloaded, light sources in the correct position. I am used to shoots where there are multiple people and this felt mildly nostalgic like I was back in secondary school.
It was a vast difference to the shoot I art directed back in 2019 for Johnnie Walker but there were also so many similarities. Nature, projection, immersion.
I feel confident now I have these test shots that I know what can and can’t be done. I can start to think about going further a field for the shots, potentially borrowing a generator, thinking of different natural spots to film in… Waterfalls, lakes, quarrys etc. All in the theme of bringing these technology based rituals out into the open.
Could I use an LLM on the side of a giant cliff face as if I am asking the cliffs a question?
There are lots of different ways I could explore this and I’m happy to have a foundation of the idea now.
This is a small sample of the footage that I shot, I’m going to edit some of the other shots together over the next week or so.
