‘Feminine’ endeavours (as defined by stereotype) are often not taken seriously. That’s kind of the reason I want to do it. Not because I don’t want to be taken seriously, but because I want to challenge this idea that you have to be interested in certain ways of expression, that aren’t related to women’s history, to be taken seriously.
I also don’t want my work to be feminist. How I can achieve that I don’t really know, because at the end of the day, perception is not mine it’s someone elses. I’m just a woman creating art that reflects my experience.
I’m exploring coding within the fabrics somehow, getting messages into the pieces I create like 1940s spies did during world war two. Not only do I want to use yarn (and other materials) to express a concept, I also want to have small messages embedded in the pieces. Ones that people can’t see, but can learn about. A history and a story within it.
Currently my fear is that I cannot incorporate my digital self, my digital illustration side, I cannot world build outside the tactile, but that’s a limiting fear. Just because my yarn looks like it belongs in your grandmas kitchen doesn’t mean I can’t bring new tech into it. Infact I think doing so might answer some of my concerns:
What sets it apart?
How do I visually show that we see these types of crafts in a certain way automatically?
How to I FULLY bring it out of ‘item production’ and solidly into fine art?
