I get very high off group crits.

It felt like giving art direction advice again which was super fun.

The feedback I got was interesting, Sophie could see things in my first few paintings from last month that I didn’t see myself. Like a wolf, a womb. A wolf and womb manifesting in my paintings is very up my street.

I discussed with Jonathan (I was lucky he popped in whislt my crit was going on) about how to go about the destruction and also whether to use a different material from canvas to have over the frame.

Also need to look at ways to hang the ‘paintings’, I’m very wary that one jenga block being removed will collapse the whole thing. So for now I’m sticking to the idea that they are being hung, to be obvious about the fact I decided not to paint them. They are canvas. Hammer them in aggressively?

maybe.

I love love loved seeing other peoples work, I loved seeing how there are so many different variations in Sophies work, and the way they change and develop as she creates one piece a day. It also intrigued me that I was really drawn to the very obvious constructivist piece, but when I looked closer it wasn’t my favourite of them all. The pieces that represented her, such as the ones coming out from the centre, were the ones I loved the most. I think I mistook familiarity of style with ‘love’.

Pritishs ideas for his diorama are coming along and it was interesting to watch his video imagining how those two elements will come together.

I really enjoyed seeing his drawings and felt they were almost dreamlike. Adored the anatomical drawing and nervous system influence as I’ve been obsessed with the visceral nature of the body drawn in a scientific way since surgeries, and body parts sticking out of my stomach. I’ve had a relationship with the body not many have had. It is a machine, not magic.

Overall, it was fun to do the crits and see each others work. I just need to get on and destory some canvas’ now.
